Konflikt '47, Fellowship & Russ

**********

A Konflikt ’47 game that Todd ran last weekend.
Unfortunately Captain America was not as formidable as he is in the movies.

Finished cleaning the yard this week, removing much of the acorns. Also managed to put down more grass seed. So far the temperature has been above freezing, so there are no leaves falling yet.

I finished reading “The Fellowship of The Rings,” by J.R.R. Tolkien.
No matter how many times I read it, there is always more that I learn about the story and the characters.

“Being autumn, I thought you'd like to know how the pre-Halloween holiday of Octoberfest started… Originally, this drinking party celebrated the end of harvest season, for the aristocracy figured that turning a portion of the harvest into alcohol would distract the serfs from figuring out the one-sided nature of the feudal system.

Nowadays, most people are under the false impression that the celebration was always called Octoberfest, but that's not always been the case. This celebration was originally called Septemberfest because it used to be held in September, although admittedly, a particularly good harvest sometimes extended it into the next month, where it was called UberSeptemberFest -- a real party of a party.

Indeed, ever since the Middle Ages, there was a well-known joyous saying to open the festivities: "Achtung, UberSeptemberFest ist hier!" Being impatient to start the party, town burgermeisters eventually shortened and simplified this to "Achtuberfest!"

About this time, Englander tourists misheard the saying and came back home raving about this party called Octoberfest, which they immediately recognized as a good thing to appropriate and spread around the globe. And that's how the celebration came to be called Octoberfest.     Really.”

On October 25, 1854 Lord James Cardigan lead the British Light Cavalry Brigade against Russian guns and infantry.

The Poem

The Charge of the Light Brigade

I
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

II
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
   Someone had blundered.
   Theirs not to make reply,
   Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
   Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

III
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
   Rode the six hundred.

IV
Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
   All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
   Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
   Not the six hundred.

V
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
   Left of six hundred.

VI
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
   All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
   Noble six hundred!
