Rides, Eldorado & Spartacus

**************

Dee and I, along with Stephen, Christina, Eryn and Hailey went to “Water Country USA” this week. It was my first visit, and if I stay in shape, it won’t be my last.

The rides: Aquazoid, Big Daddy Falls, Colossal Curl, Hubba Hubba Highway, Jet Stream, Malibu Pipeline, Meltdown, Nitro Racer, Surfers Bay, Vanish Point, and Wild Thang.
Dee and I went on all but the Colossal Curl and Vanish Point.

There was a lot of “hooting and hollering,” laughing and family fun. We were tired at the end of the day but enjoyed every minute.

Eldorado

Gaily bedight,
   A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
   Had journeyed long,
   Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.

   But he grew old—
   This knight so bold—
And o’er his heart a shadow—
   Fell as he found
   No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.

   And, as his strength
   Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow—
   ‘Shadow,’ said he,
   ‘Where can it be—
This land of Eldorado?’

   ‘Over the Mountains
   Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
   Ride, boldly ride,’
   The shade replied,—
‘If you seek for Eldorado!’

The movie “Spartacus,” staring Kirt Douglas was a 1960’s movie that won four Academy Awards. It was, and still is, a great movie. My Dad took my brother Tom and I to see it when it first came out.

This is one of my favorite scenes.

Old words and phrases that are not used any more were posted by my buddy Phil. Thought I would share a few. Did a wee bit of research to gather info on each one. I don’t know how accurate they are, but “gee whillikers,” I did my best.

“Heavens To Murgatroyd”
This was used by a cartoon character named “Snagglepuss,” who was a regular on the Yogi Bear Show.

“The origins of this expression are unclear. It may have originated sometime between the years 1850 and 1914.
Heavens to Betsy is another variation of the phrase for Heaven’s sake, which began as a euphemism for what some considered the blasphemous for God’s sake and for Christ’s sake.”

“On consulting the Oxford English Dictionary and the Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, it seems clear that the name of the king of Judah (which also occurs in several other spellings, most commonly Jehosaphat) was used in the United States around the middle of the nineteenth century as a mild oath, a euphemism for Jehovah or Jesus. The phrase Jumping Jehoshaphat is first recorded from Mayne Reid’s Headless Horseman of 1866, but is probably older.”

“There is solid evidence that this] was in was already widely in use in the late 1920s as a jocular euphemism for “Holy Moses,” an oath that, at that time, might well have been offensive to some people. The writers of Captain Marvel simply picked it up and ran with it.”

Our grandson Justin has a list of books for his summer reading requirement at school. One of the books is "The Hobbit," by J.R.R. Tolkien. It has been some time since I read it and have decided to pick it up and read it again. Perhaps Justin and I could start some dialogue and learn a few things about Middle Earth and the story of "There and Back Again."

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Charley Pride - “Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger” - This is a really great song. Listen to the words...
